Canada says it is pursuing “credible allegations” that tie agents of the Indian government to the fatal shooting of prominent Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told lawmakers Monday.

Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Sikh diaspora communities and is the site of Sikh activism that has displeased the Indian government. Some of these groups have advocated for the Khalistan separatist movement, which seeks to carve out an independent Sikh homeland in India called Khalistan. Nijjar vocally championed that cause.
